3 Most Important Tips for Your Senior Session: Unveiling Your True Self

Senior year – it’s the pinnacle of a studen’ts high school journey! It’s a time of final exams, graduation caps, and most importantly, senior portraits that will forever encapsulate this incredible phase of life. We get it–capturing personality in a few frames can be very daunting. As a former teacher, finding the true essence of a senior and getting to share in this inspiring time is one of my most favorite things. I often get emails saying things like, “We’re in tears from your write up on our son or daughter. We can’t believe how deeply you got to know them in such a short time.” That’s because I’m fascinated by people and absolutely inspired by these incredible youngsters with so many possibilities in their future. Feeling comfortable and truly SEEN is a huge first step in amazing photos! But, I’ve also got some great tips for you on how to make the most of your senior photos!

1. Unveil Your Authentic Self: Your senior portraits are all about YOU – your passions, your style, and your unique personality. Let your wardrobe reflect who you are. If you’re an athlete, show off your team jersey or your sneakers. If you’re a bookworm, bring along your favorite novel. Don’t hesitate to flaunt that quirky scarf or that vintage jacket – it’s all about showcasing the real you! Remember, bringing layers can easily switch up your outfit – a jacket, a cardigan, a hat – adding a new dimension to your portraits.

2. Location, Location, Location: Choose a setting that speaks to your story. Do you have a favorite spot in town, like that cozy coffee shop where you had countless study sessions? Or perhaps the serene lakeside where you found solace during summers? Chantal Elise Photography will guide you to the perfect location that matches your personality, so you don’t need to worry – just think about what you like, and we’ll do the heavy lifting!

3. Give Yourself Time: Choosing an hour session is a must. If you know you need time to warm up (as most people do), the first 30 minutes we’ll capture great photos, but you’ll really warm up on that second half. Relax, take your time, and let the session flow naturally. It’s all about capturing candid moments that reflect your journey.

As you step into your future, your senior session is a unique opportunity to freeze a moment in time – the excitement, the anticipation, and even the nostalgia. Cherish this experience, because years down the line, you’ll look back and smile at how far you’ve come.

As I witnessed Emily and Jamie throughout their special day, I couldn’t help but admire how effortlessly they stayed present and relaxed. They really GET each other. They really GROUND each other. As the bubbles floated in the breeze,  I was reminded of life’s fleeting nature and the significance of these cherished summer nights.

The Loeks Retreat Center at Camp Blodgett provided the perfect backdrop for this intimate wedding. (Check out their website for a digital tour and the chance to clear your event date!) Nestled by the lake, the venue boasts a stunning deck overlooking Lake Michigan, a glassed-in porch, and a cozy lodge for guests to stay. The facility offers an idyllic setting for intimate gatherings, allowing couples to exchange vows against the breathtaking backdrop of the water. In the words of an old proverb, “A lake carries you into recesses of feeling otherwise impenetrable.” For Emily and Jamie, the lake is a symbol of their journey—a place where they found solace and deeper connection.

As their photographer and a neutral party, can I just say–aren’t these two stunning? And I love their humor and laid-back vibe together.

If you’re dreaming of a lakeside wedding like Emily and Jamie’s, I’d be honored to be part of your special day.
